OpenAI, one of the greatest AI research organizations, founded in 2015 and the father of ChatGPT, is a tool that I’m sure all of you use in some way or another.

If I start with their accomplishments it’s going to be a long article so to save you from the trouble of reading what you all already know, let’s get a news roundup on the company.

OpenAI has faced a couple of unprecedented shocks in the last few weeks so let’s see what they are about.

Elon Musk drops his lawsuit against OpenAI

Musk routinely takes his fights with other tech billionaires and this time it iwas Sam Altman.

He filed a lawsuit against Altman and OpenAI, alleging that the company had breached a “founding agreement” to develop artificial general intelligence to benefit humanity and not as a for-profit company.

The claim was never in Musk’s favor as the case never had a strong legal foundation. OpenAI labeled these claims as “frivolous” and “incoherent” and later claimed that Musk is just jealous of the company’s success after he walked out on them in 2018.

They further released a series of emails that talked about how Musk was the one who supported them to move towards a ‘for profit model’ and collaborate with Tesla to be their cash cow.

Elon finally withdrew his suit last week realising that his chances of winning are not good.

Jan Leike and Ilya Sutskever’s departure

Ilya Sutskever and Jan Leike announced their departures from OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, on Tuesday. They were the leaders of the company’s super alignment team — the team tasked with ensuring that AI stays aligned with the goals of its makers, rather than acting unpredictably and harming humanity.

They’re not the only ones who’ve left. Since last November — when OpenAI’s board tried to fire CEO Sam Altman only to see him quickly claw his way back to power — at least five more of the company’s most safety-conscious employees have either quit or been pushed out.

If you are in touch with meme media, some are saying OpenAI developed some evil technology that Ilya, their chief scientist found out about and left.

Even if that’s the case, it’s not completely true. It’s more about how they treat humans. More about equity within the company especially when it comes to Altman.

Altman’s tweet talks about equity. Employees are made to sign offboarding agreements with non-disparagement provisions which if not signed would mean losing out on your equity and ultimately millions of dollars. Employees therefore are scared to talk about this in public.

Altman in his tweet also admitted to the same and apologized. Tech founders apologizing for their wrongs, there is always a first time for everything.

OpenAI has faced various other adversities over the last few days with its power outage and Europe AI convention but nothing will stop them from taking over the world (quite literally).

We’ll keep coming back with more such editions covering the world of AI to you.
