Perplexity AI Launches Free Deep Research Tool for Expert-Level Analysis

Perplexity AI, an AI-powered conversational search engine, is adding more features to cater to its growing user base. On Thursday, the company revealed that its new Deep Research tool will now be available for free. This tool can perform numerous searches, analyze hundreds of sources, and reason through the material to generate detailed reports autonomously.

The Deep Research tool is comparable to ChatGPT and Google Gemini, but it is accessible to free users with a daily limit on the number of queries. CEO Aravind Srinivas shared the announcement on LinkedIn, expressing excitement about offering the new tool to all users for free.

Paid users will have access to an advanced research assistant for $20 per month, which allows for up to 500 queries a day and provides a complete research report in less than three minutes. Srinivas highlighted that the Perplexity Deep Research Agent is significantly faster than other alternatives. Most queries are processed within three minutes, with performance on par with OpenAI's o3 agent on the Humanity Last Exam Benchmark and achieving 93.9% on the SimpleQA benchmark. He added that the goal is to democratize access to expert knowledge, making it affordable and widely available, thanks to the efficiency of open-source models.

While Perplexity AI excels at answering questions, the Deep Research tool goes beyond providing instant answers. It spends up to two minutes on the task, utilizing search and coding capabilities. The model iterates through searches, reads documents, and adapts its research plan, much like a human conducting research. After analyzing all the sources, it consolidates the findings into a clear and comprehensive report, which can be exported as a PDF, document, or shared as a Perplexity Page.

According to the company, Deep Research is designed to enable anyone to perform expert-level analysis across a variety of complex topics. The tool is particularly strong in areas like finance, marketing, and technology, and is also useful for personal consulting in fields such as health, product research, and travel planning.
