Companies are investing in AI like crazy. Investors are investing in AI like crazy. OpenAI recently closed a funding round which valued them at an approximate value of 157$ billion.

Microsoft is also riding the wave. They have unveiled an ambitious plan to invest €4.3 billion over the next two years to enhance its hyperscale cloud and AI data center infrastructure in Italy. This investment represents the largest commitment from Microsoft in the country to date and is set to transform Italy North into one of the most significant data center regions in Europe, serving as a crucial hub for the Mediterranean and North African markets.

This landmark investment underscores our long-standing commitment to Italy’s digital transformation

Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft

Brad later emphasized that by expanding access to AI technology and expertise, Microsoft is empowering the Italian government, businesses, and workforce to build an AI-driven economy that fosters job creation and prosperity.

In addition to infrastructure development, Microsoft is dedicated to equipping over one million Italians with digital skills by the end of 2025 through an AI National Skilling Initiative. This program will offer training in areas such as AI fluency, technical skills, and business transformation related to AI.

The new infrastructure will adhere to Microsoft’s AI Access Principles, which were introduced earlier this year to guide the company’s operations of AI data centers and other AI assets worldwide. With this investment, Microsoft is not only positioning itself at the forefront of Italy's digital landscape but is also paving the way for a more skilled and innovative workforce.
