Making Cloud Computing more accessible

one step at a time

In partnership with

AI has had all the attention it could in the last few years, but something that often escapes the eye is what goes behind successful AI systems. While there are multiple such things, one crucial element is ‘compute resources’. Don’t worry, the term was super foreign to us too until some time ago, so we are here to make it easier for you!

The AWS defines ‘compute’ as concepts and objects related to software computation. To put it more simply, imagine a machine learning tool, now CPU and memory are resources which will help it operate and these resources are called compute resources.

Now let’s move on to the next step, when such an application runs on a single, local device it only has compute resources of that device. However, if an application runs on a ‘cloud system’ then it can access compute resources of multiple devices. This helps applications run more efficiently, which is the reason why cloud computing becomes essential in today’s time.

As per the Economic Times, 87% of India’s data centres which provide these services are currently in 4 cities and 5 major players hold around 40% market share. This also translates to limited options availability for Indian companies, and higher costs.

For a country like India, cheaper and more accessible computing is the first answer to increasing the penetration and use cases of AI. So, whats the solution? One possible solution could be creation of micro data centres across the country. This will allow companies to choose data centres on a more local level and customise the compute resources they use basis their needs. It is expected to not only reduce costs, but also prove to be more sustainable and a possible way to standardise the fragmented data centres. One such pilot is currently being run by People+AI, under the name of Open Cloud Compute.

However, in parallel, the Economic Times reports that the government already aims to establish GPU clusters to offer access to compute services at a concessional rate to startups and researchers. This could eat into one of the main advantages envisioned about micro data centres.

Whether or not micro data centres will become a successful reality, is a question for the future. However, AI is already one in many ways, so keep reading AI For You to be on top of everything AI :)
