If you’ve wondered about the lack of mention of China in our articles, then it’s not because we don’t like to feature our neighboring country. However, turns out that the lack of publicity doesn’t mean that China is lagging. On the contrary, a recent UN report has said that Chinese inventors have been filing the maximum number of Gen AI patents.

As you probably know by now, Gen AI is a field of AI that focuses on generating any kind of media or response that you could think of. Right from images, and songs to interview responses. These Gen AI inventions work on Large Language Models (LLMs) which are trained using humongous amounts of data and made to learn from the errors they make. Gen AI is particularly important because of the ripples it can create in potentially all sectors of economic and national significance.

Coming back to the hero of today’s article- China. It’s also interesting to see that not only are they leading this race, but are also significantly ahead of the other countries, which are the USA, Japan, and India. The number is six times the number of patents by US inventors, according to the same United Nations Report on Intellectual Property. China has the largest population in the world, this automatically translates into the availability of very extensive and specialized datasets for these Chinese companies, something that could help them gain an edge.

However, the question that’s most intriguing for now is whether the nation is simply focused on quantity over quality or if their inventions can give stiff competition to the likes of ChatGPT and other global Gen AI tools. Apart from the degree of innovation, factors such as the Startup ecosystem and trade relations will also play a key role in determining if these Chinese companies can become global leaders.
