What We Bring to the Table

There is no future without the past.

This couldn't be more true for the world of Artificial Intelligence. I feel that the most fitting start to this newsletter is to go back to the origins of AI. If you have had some slivers of interest in AI, you would have probably heard of Geoffrey Hinton, ‘The Godfather of AI’. In today’s article, I delve deeper into how his life has given direction to the world of AI- so let’s dive right in.

A professor by occupation, his first notable contribution was to the development of neural networks, a technique now famously known as Backpropagation. In simpler terms, he made progress in developing a mechanism for machines to work their way from output to input when trying to discern errors. This ability helps developers adjust the role of each step of the process according to the quantum of the errors they are making.

Another breakthrough that Hinton achieved in Deep Learning was to reach an unprecedented accuracy level in Image-recognition tasks. For those of you new to the field, Deep Learning teaches machines to process complex data sets in a way that resembles how the human brain works. Both have the same underlying technology- neural networks, used to transmit and process information ranging from images to sounds. Neural networks are the foundational reason behind AI replacing so many human jobs today- whether it is Chatbots, Voice Activated Devices, Facial Recognition, and much more.

Several years later, Geoffrey Hinton went on to join Google Brain, the AI research team of Google after it acquired one of his companies- DDNresearch. However, here’s the catch- around a year ago Geoffrey Hinton quit his role at Google to be able to vocalize the harmful effects of AI developments.

To quote Hinton himself, "Right now, AI machines are not more intelligent than us, as far as I can tell. But I think they soon may be.” When will AI take over the world? Will it end up becoming the next bane of our future?

I leave you with these questions because they aren't something I can answer right now. However, AI For You, is here to help you form your answers to these questions and more that exist in the infinite world of AI. Here’s what you can expect -
