Apple’s Siri Gets an AI Makeover

Apple is revamping its Siri digital assistant with advanced generative AI, aiming to make it more conversational and capable of handling sophisticated tasks. According to recent job listings, Apple is seeking experts in conversational AI interfaces to help build a next-gen Siri, designed to engage users in dynamic, back-and-forth dialogues. The new Siri, internally codenamed ‘LLM Siri,’ will leverage large language models (LLMs) to improve its understanding and responsiveness. It’s also expected to integrate with third-party apps through App Intents, allowing Siri to perform tasks directly within other applications.

This upgraded version of Siri will be part of Apple’s broader AI initiative, Apple Intelligence, and is expected to be previewed in 2024 with the release of iOS 19 and macOS 16, though a full rollout may not happen until 2026. The new Siri will mark the biggest change to the voice assistant since its debut 13 years ago, focusing not only on improving conversations but also on enhancing its overall functionality.

Internally, Apple developers have been testing this new Siri on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. The latest iOS 18 update, which allows users to type commands instead of speaking them, is a step toward this transformation. Apple has also teased the future integration of AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini into its ecosystem, making this Siri update part of a broader push to incorporate AI more deeply into its devices. This transformation positions Siri to compete with other AI-driven assistants and help Apple stay at the forefront of the evolving digital assistant landscape.
